FAUX VINTAGE MAPS

The following pieces are the product of a unique technique, initially a serendipitous result of an experiment, but then deliberately developed by the artist over several years to create original, faux effects.

Here, it is used to produce an aged, eroded finish to a group of images sourced from ancient maps. The finished works were applied like wallpaper to enhance the niche walls of an Italian restaurant in the prestigious Samoset Resort in Rockport, ME.

This same process may be applied to any image where a weathered look is desired.
The possibilities are endless.

FAUX TILES

Another series of faux effect pieces designed to imitate worn, cracked, ancient tiles. The size range is typically between 4″ x 4″ and 12″ x 12″. These involve a medieval hunting theme developed for an open, manor-style kitchen, but the image possibilities are many and varied.

GROWING GIFTS & STIMULATING SKILLS…Bryan was 10 yrs old when he did these. I brought him an apple and every time he took a bite, he created another 4″ x 4″ canvas tile painting for his “Apple Story”. We assembled them in different ways and found that they worked just as well collected in a vertical or horizontal group, or a linear arrangement. Click images to expand.

This is my daughter; a face I know very well. The painting is built up in the same thin, sometimes translucent layers but brought to a tighter finish.
This piece traveled to The National Portrait Gallery in London for the 2009 BP Portrait Award Competition." >

Painted on six canvases, each 2.3" deep with all four edges painted to reflect the sides of the neighboring panels. Viewed from one side, the image remains uninterrupted and undistorted. Clifford West (AVA Gallery, owner & teacher, Lebanon, NH) was my mentor through key stages of my artistic development. I gave him my best. My last gift to him was this portrait, painted in the final months of his life. Dementia was taking hold, except he remained acutely lucid about art until the end. When I presented this piece to him, I was terrified of his critique. He was silent for long minutes. I saw his eyes well up and his voice cracked slightly as he declared it a "tour de force"! I will always be grateful.

Commissioned by Cold Spring Harbor Press. Max was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1962 for his team discovery of DNA. I was invited to paint his portrait for the cover of a book of his letters published six years after his passing because I knew him as family and could infuse the work with his engaging personality. It was a great privilege.
The same work is on the cover of the Winter 2010 edition of “Perspectives in Biology and Medicine”, Johns Hopkins University Press.
The original is in private collection, but a print also hangs in the lobby at the Max F. Perutz Laboratory in Vienna, Austria.
